Description

The aim of this initiative is to restore and enhance the old train station and the surrounding area in the Mar Mikhael district by giving it a new use as a public park of industrial archaeology in Beirut. More than two years after the explosion of Beirut's port, the need to continue with the urban regeneration of the severely damaged Lebanese capital and to face the risk of losing forever its historical and cultural heritage has led the Italian government to finance this project. The Mar Mikhael railway station remains an important historical site in Beirut and, in the future, it will be able to play a leading role as a cultural and attractive centre to improve the life and well-being of Beirut's citizens. In addition to the degradation suffered due to abandonment, the unique industrial heritage site was heavily damaged by the explosion due to its proximity to Beirut's port in August 2020. The affected area of 10,000 m² includes several historical buildings and train cars dating back to the construction of the station during the 19th century, as well as green spaces. Through two separated, but interconnected, projects funded by AICS and implemented by UNESCO and UN-Habitat, the aim is to transform the space for the benefit of communities by focusing on restoring and rehabilitating the site's industrial heritage and making it easily accessible to all people living in Lebanon as well as tourists and other visitors. By intervening in the historic buildings and space UNESCO will rehabilitate, restore and enhance the offer and accessibility of industrial heritage and cultural and creative life. The rehabilitation of heritage assets and restoration functions were identified by the 3RF partners as an important commitment to the recovery and reconstruction of the city. read more close
