Description
With this intervention, AICS aims to contribute to the reforestation, conservation and protection program of the forest envisaged by Uganda's Third National Development Plan 2021-25, through a regenerative use of natural resources aimed at economic growth and livelihood security. The initiative will be implemented in Karamoja, a region particularly exposed to extreme events caused by climate change: desertification, drought and erratic rains, which further affect the poverty and food insecurity that characterize the region. This action will contribute to the achievement of the national objective to increase land area covered by trees from 9.1 to 15% through the restoration of the forest and tree cover by natural regeneration or by plantation or agroforestry. In particular, activities will be carried out in 5 major areas: 1) conservation and protection of forests through the involvement of communities and local and national authorities, focusing on women and youth. 2) Promotion and education in trees protection and conservation through the involvement of schools and families in exhibition planting programs with indigenous species with commercial value 3) Promotion and development of sustainable and regenerative agroforestry value chains and support to communities and private sector (small medium farmers and trees plantation owners) for accessing finance, regional market and trades. 4) Reduction of forest erosion and cutting for firewood, charcoal and domestic uses by improving quality and reducing consumption (green cooking and energy saving strategies). 5) Improving access by communities and small and medium farmers to carbon finance as incentive and better sustainability of forest-trees conservation and agroforestry value chains management. These interventions contribute to the Ugandan "National Determined Contribution (NDC)" and to the implementation of the green agenda, and consequently to the resilience to climate change. They will also contribute to increase land areas covered by forests, the restoration of degraded areas, and consequently a reduction in CO2 emissions.
