Description

With this intervention, AICS aims to contribute to the reforestation, conservation and protection program of the forest envisaged by Uganda's Third National Development Plan 2021-25, through a regenerative use of natural resources aimed at economic growth and livelihood security. The initiative will be implemented in Karamoja, a region particularly exposed to extreme events caused by climate change: desertification, drought and erratic rains, which further affect the poverty and food insecurity that characterize the region. This action will contribute to the achievement of the national objective to increase land area covered by trees from 9.1 to 15% through the restoration of the forest and tree cover by natural regeneration or by plantation or agroforestry. In particular, activities will be carried out in 5 major areas: 1) conservation and protection of forests through the involvement of communities and local and national authorities, focusing on women and youth. 2) Promotion and education in trees protection and conservation through the involvement of schools and families in exhibition planting programs with indigenous species with commercial value 3) Promotion and development of sustainable and regenerative agroforestry value chains and support to communities and private sector (small medium farmers and trees plantation owners) for accessing finance, regional market and trades. 4) Reduction of forest erosion and cutting for firewood, charcoal and domestic uses by improving quality and reducing consumption (green cooking and energy saving strategies). 5) Improving access by communities and small and medium farmers to carbon finance as incentive and better sustainability of forest-trees conservation and agroforestry value chains management. These interventions contribute to the Ugandan "National Determined Contribution (NDC)" and to the implementation of the green agenda, and consequently to the resilience to climate change. They will also contribute to increase land areas covered by forests, the restoration of degraded areas, and consequently a reduction in CO2 emissions. read more close

SDGs

  • 13.1 - Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
  • 15.1 - By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements
  • 15.2 - By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally
  • 15.3 - By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world
  • 15.b - Mobilize significant resources from all sources and at all levels to finance sustainable forest management and provide adequate incentives to developing countries to advance such management, including for conservation and reforestation
  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
