Description

The project aims at increasing the resilience of Bosaso population through the promotion of equitable and sustainable access to potable water. It will involve the abstraction of water from the Duud Shabel springs located about 26-27 km South East of Bosaso and channelling it to the main city reservoir. This will increase the water production of Golden Utility Management Company (GUMCO), a PPP water service provider for Bosaso, by at least 164% (4.000m3/day) during the dry season and up to 246% (6.000 m3/day) in the rainy season. The project’s extended scope aims at increasing the adduction system to 14,500m3/day, to allow in the near future the connection of other springs available in few kilometers radius; this will prepare the conditions to cover the majority of the city water needs of the next few years. Technical assistance will be provided to GUMCO and Puntland Water Development Agency (PWDA) in the definition of a pro-poor water tariff and connection fees to enhance equitable access to sustainable water service delivery. This will allow access to basic water requirements by the less privileged segment of the population in the current situations of reducing water supply and increasing demand. Additionally, the project will establish three irrigation systems for the Duud Shabel population to support irrigated agriculture reducing reliance to rain-fed agriculture in the changing climatic conditions characterized by short duration low intensity rainy seasons. read more close
