Description

“You are not alone – inclusive health care for prevention and treatment of visual impairment, physical disabilities and mental health” is a three-year project aimed at reducing under-5 mortality in Uganda (target SDG 3.2.1) by improving the quality of life and social integration of people with visual, motor and mental disabilities in Agago District, Northern Uganda, as well as preventing such disabilities and improving specific health care. The goal will be pursued by expanding and strengthening the services aimed at early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the above-mentioned disabilities at Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo (DAMHK). For over 60 years it has been the only hospital in the district and it will be supported by its historical partner Ambrosoli Foundation in the creation of a more inclusive health service that provides special attention to the needs of persons with disabilities. The lack of eye care services in Agago District negatively impacts quality of life for many people: about 7% of the population above 2 years of age is affected by visual impairments. CBM Italy, thanks to its solid experience in projects centred on the prevention and treatment of visual impairments, will support DAMHK in the creation of a primary level eye clinic and will ensure the provision of eye surgery through the local partner St. Joseph hospital Kitgum. The eye clinic will allow DAMHK to improve the quality of care for diabetic patients, ensuring at least one yearly eye check and setting up a diabetes clinic. The second outcome focuses on preventing and assisting patients with motor and neuromotor disabilities. In collaboration with the specialised rehabilitation hospital CoRSU, the project plans to carry out a broad intervention, aimed at strengthening equipment, skills and protocols. CoRSU hospital will manage a training program for the staff of the surgical, orthopedic and rehabilitation services, which will allow to expand the type of surgical interventions and the quality of services for trauma, road accidents and other conditions and diseases that can cause motor and neuromotor disabilities. A center dedicated to motor and neuromotor rehabilitation will be inaugurated at DAMHK, available for persons with disabilities and patients in post-surgical or post-traumatic rehabilitation. DAMHK will be equipped with a high-dependency unit, and the skills and equipment for proper management of neonatal resuscitation will be strengthened, to prevent severe outcomes that can cause death or permanent disabilities. The set of planned activities will provide a concrete response to the needs of people with motor and neuromotor disabilities and will reduce the risk of the onset of disability as a result of injuries, traumas, birth asphyxia and other diseases and conditions addressed by the project. The third project outcome addresses mental health. Northern Uganda was the battleground of a fierce civil war that lasted over 20 years, during which the population suffered unimaginable violence, with a particularly strong impact in Agago District. The project aims to integrate mental health into the basic services offered by the hospital by strengthening suicide prevention services, training health professionals according to the principles of the WHO MHGAP project and hiring specialized psychiatric staff. A counselling desk will also be created and dedicated to mothers and families of persons with disabilities, to provide concrete support to families facing problems related to stigma, poverty and the lack of adequate support from institutions in caring for children with disability. read more close
