Description
The proposal aims to support Christian minorities who have seen a deterioration of their living conditions and security as a result of the Iraqi conflict, the establishment of the caliphate and the phase of instability that has characterized the entire region for years. The action is developed in synergy with the on-going initiative in Baghdad (AICS AID 012121-02-3) with the aim of expanding the target beneficiaries belonging to persecuted Christian minorities and extend the actions to other geographical areas of the country particularly affected by persecution. The general objective of the initiative is to improve the social, economic and cultural inclusion of the Christian minority in Iraq by promoting the qualification of skills, the building of resilience, and the application of human rights.Remaining the main target group the Christian community in the Governorates of Baghdad and Bàssora, a particular focus will be oriented on the population with disabilities and women, subjects even more vulnerable in a context of persecution of minorities. The initiative will have a total duration of 24 months and is developed on three results. R.1. which provides vocational training and job placement for the promotion of new income-generating professions in the field of economic development and protection of cultural heritage with particular attention to the inclusion of people with disabilities; R.2. which provides the improvement of assistance and information services for the promotion of Human Rights and the peaceful coexistence between the Christian community and other religious communities; R.3. which provides for the activation of social services in the area of guidance and assistance for the Christian community in Iraq, with particular attention to families in distress. To achieve the proposed objectives and results, vocational training activities will be carried out in the areas of carpentry, hairdressing, tailoring and restoration of ancient manuscripts of the Christian religion. The areas of training have been identified among those with the greatest market demand. The training includes in the target group people with disabilities. In addition, it provides for the allocation of start-up and seed-money funds to a selected number of beneficiaries for the start-up or consolidation of their activities. Concerning the restoration of ancient manuscripts of the Christian religion, this represents an important aspect of Iraq's historical cultural heritage, which is heavily damaged. However, since there are no professional figures in the country able to provide a concrete response to this need, the initiative will support the creation of such professionals. One of the main focuses of the initiative is the promotion of the exercise of human rights. Actions for the promotion of human rights are foreseen in the family sphere, in particular for the rights of persons with disabilities, institutional, through teacher training, and community, through actions for the promotion of human rights through artistic expressions. Furthermore, it is foreseen to promote inter-religious dialogue and peace-building at the community level. Concerning social services in the territory of Bàssora, it is expected the activation of a psychological support service for minors and their families’ victims of post-conflict trauma and forced migration at Caritas centre in Bàssora. In addition, it is foreseen the action in kindergartens in the area, with the aim of improving the skills of teaching staff. The action also provides economic support to families in difficult conditions to ensure the right to education. The entire strategy will take place in the Governorates of Baghdad and Bàssora and will be developed in collaboration with a local (Caritas Iraq, HHRO and Chaldean Catholic Archdiocese) and international (Terres des Hommes Italy and Studio IN) strategic partnership, which will provide their expertise in the areas of intervention in the territories indicated.
