Description

The ALL IN ONE project, promoted by C&S and CUAMM, is part of the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, which has made even more evident the relationship that exists between human, animal, and environmental health. The objective of the project is to intervene in a context such as Karamoja, at high endemic risk of communicable diseases both human and animal, to reduce the incidence of such diseases, adopting a health model based on the integration of different disciplines that is inspired by the concept of One Health. The initiative at a global level is aligned with OSS 3, and in particular with target 3.3, and contributes to the implementation at the district level of the One Health National Strategic Plan of the Ugandan government. ALL IN ONE aims to build more resilient social and health systems by strengthening their preparedness and capacity to respond to diseases with epidemic potential in Napak and Moroto districts. ALL IN ONE acts on three levels to create an integrated system of prevention, monitoring, and control of diseases with epidemic potential: 1) the prevention of infections through the improvement of hygiene conditions and practices at the community level; 2) the improvement of infection and control practices and epidemiological surveillance at the health care level; 3) the improvement of animal infectious disease surveillance and animal welfare. At the community level, the project aims at rehabilitating 70 wells and building 210 pit latrine, promoting the conscious use of safe water sources and pit latrine and counteract the widespread practice of open defecation, which is the main cause of infectious diseases among the community. The project makes use of the experience of the NGO Insieme Si Può, rooted in the territory and expert in conducting awareness campaigns. At the health level, the project aims at strengthening the capacities of Napak and Moroto hospitals and 16 peripheral health centers selected on prevention, containment, and surveillance of infections with epidemic potential. The initiative also finances the strengthening of the two hospitals' laboratories, in particular, that of Matany, where a basic microbiology laboratory will be created, whose sustainability is guaranteed by the Hospital's full involvement in the project. In addition, thanks to the participation of a research team from the University of Florence and Makerere University, it is intended to carry out for the first time in the region, an operational research on antibiotic resistance, an emerging problem in Uganda with significant impacts on human health, animal health and the environment, which led the country to adopt the One Health National Strategy. At the livestock level, ALL IN ONE intends to strengthen the system of alert and control of animal infections and zoonoses, through the training of veterinary and para-veterinary staff and through the support to livestock vaccination. The Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Perugia contributes significantly to the activity, by investigating the incidence of infectious diseases and zoonoses and their impact on animal welfare in the area. The initiative aims to promote the adoption of the One Health National Strategy at the district level. It contributes to the creation of a multidisciplinary district team that, informed by the results of operational research, is in charge of monitoring the spread of diseases with epidemic potential, in an integrated manner. Finally, to counteract the disastrous effects of epidemics on the socio-economic level, the action intends to offer the families of Napak and Moroto the opportunity to improve their knowledge of animal health. To this extent, the project intends to launch a pilot initiative in 20 villages, whose primary beneficiaries are women, to start income-generating activities based on livestock, providing support to marketing techniques of livestock and thus promoting women's empowerment. read more close
