Description

The initiative aims to contribute to the reduction of inequalities between the Iraqi population belonging to the Christian-Chaldean minority and other communities displaced living in Lebanon. The persecution of Christian minorities in Iraq has led to the perpetuation of a humanitarian emergency that still forces hundreds of people to seek refuge in neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, where about 2,500 Iraqi Chaldean families are currently living in a situation of marginalization. After entering Lebanon with regular tourist visas of limited duration, upon expiry of their visa, the Iraqis continue to live inside the country without protections and rights. In fact, not having ratified the Geneva Convention of 1951, Lebanon does not guarantee any right to refugee individuals in its own territory. ICU already works with the Chaldean Christian minority in Lebanon, together with its local partner Chaldean Charitable Society in Lebanon (CCSL). In this moment of health emergency due to COVID-19, ICU and CCSL have found the absolute need for further interventions to support this community, which, despite being in a situation of extreme poverty and vulnerability, is not the object of attention and support from major donors. Thanks to the on-site work experience gained and the analysis of the context and needs of the beneficiary community, ICU and the partner CCSL, a local NGO that has been working for years in contact with the Christian-Chaldean community, have chosen to focus the proposal on interventions that respond in a targeted way to the needs identified as most relevant: health (physical and mental) and training (professional and life skills). In fact, more than 90% of the Chaldean population does not have access to health services and, following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the level of discomfort and psychological stress, cases of domestic violence and alcohol consumption. Moreover, the low level of professional and interpersonal skills puts the Christian-Chaldean minority at risk of further marginalization and social stigma, both in Lebanon and with a view to integration into resettlement countries. read more close
