Description
The project will contribute to the restoration of the catchment areas affecting the Sigor plain, including the WeiWei irrigation scheme. The area has been subjected to extensive deforestation and soil degradation, especially in sloping areas, due to unsustainable farming methods, excessive grazing and deforestation. As a result, floods and landslides are increasingly frequent and also jeopardize the sustainability of the WeiWei irrigation scheme. The aim of the project is to start the restoration of the most degraded areas through the introduction of soil & water conservation techniques. In addition, the initiative will promote the adoption of regenerative farming practices to improve soil productivity and enhance the sequestration of CO2, thus contributing to the fight against climatic change. The strategy used is to reduce soil erosion in two priority areas identified as key to addressing the root causes of soil erosion and floods:1.The water catchment area that extends from Mount Korellach to the foothills; 2.The degraded riparian areas of the WeiWei River upstream of the Sigor plain. The initiative will make it possible to introduce crops and tree species capable of protecting soils but also providing new alternative sources of income to residents.
