Description

The objective of the initiative is to contribute to the sustainable and resilient territorial development (social, economic, and environmental) of the coastal and maritime area of the city of Tyre through the creation of a participatory territorial planning system and the implementation of related pilot actions. The project targets local authorities and the community to address the need to implement measures for climate change adaptation and risk prevention, as well as to provide environmental monitoring services and marine-coastal waste management. The Italian partners have pooled their expertise and best practices to develop a sustainable marine and coastal development model (regulation, monitoring and shared scientific research, NIS and target species management, waste management), which has helped mitigate pollution, curb overexploitation and irregular activities along the Salento coast, and make the economic model (fishing/tourism/trade) compatible with ecosystem protection, the safeguarding of cultural and natural heritage, and the health and well-being of the population. Through this BLU TYRE initiative, the partners aim to harmonize local interventions with international strategies within the broader process of Mediterranean cooperation, sharing—and operationalizing—this knowledge with Lebanese local authorities (Municipality of Tyre, Tyre Coast Nature Reserve, Tyros Local Action Group), with civil society, and with stakeholders from the coastal and marine area, including workers in the coastal, tourism, and cultural sectors, as well as vulnerable communities connected to the sea and the coast such as fishermen (one of the poorest categories in the country), young employees of beach facilities, women, and low-income groups living in refugee camps along the city’s coastline. read more close
