Description
Fondo COVID-19_AID_011907: The project has the aim of improving the access and the quality of inclusive eye care services both within the communities and health facilities in the districts of Kitgum, Lamwo and Arua (Acholi and West Nile sub-regions, North Uganda). In particular, the proposal focuses on the most vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities, women and children. Following the stakeholder meeting which took place in may 2018, in collaboration with the National Eye Health Coordinator from the Ministry of Health, the following strategy was set out, focusing on 3 main actions: Training on eye care and disability mainstreaming of health staff in basic health centres and the implementation of integrated outreaches and OMUs (Ophthalmic Mobile Units) in rural areas in order to reach the most vulnerable groups (persons with disabilities, women, children). The implementation of structural works within St. Joseph hospital in Kitgum, in order for it to become a secondary level eye care centre, and the supplying of equipment for the Arua Regional Referral Hospital in order to enhance the provision of eye care services such as surgeries and specialised treatments. The strengthening of the governance system in Eye Health and disability mainstreaming in order to ensure ownership of the intervention for the local authorities and to promote the inclusion of the eye care sector in the governmental policies with a specific focus on disability mainstreaming. Thanks to the facilitation the decentralization of health services at community level and the strengthening human resources and facilities, the target areas will have new centres for the provision of primary and secondary level eye care services, allowing for the treatment and visit of 76.521 patients before the end of the project, contributing to the reduction of the prevalence of avoidable blindness in the country before 2020, in line with the governmental plan "4th Eye Health Action Plan" and the objectives of the Vision 2020 WHO.
