Description

The initiative promotes sustainable and inclusive economic development in the urban and peri urban areas of Ouagadougou and the Grand Ouaga by strengthening local agri food value chains, with a particular focus on young people, women, persons with disabilities, internally displaced people and other vulnerable groups. Its objective is to enhance the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises engaged in food production, processing and marketing, while fostering decent employment, entrepreneurship, resilience and responsible consumption practices. The intervention is structured around three complementary components. The first component focuses on building the technical and managerial capacities of local enterprises through training programmes, personalised coaching, financial education, digital marketing tools and the introduction of agroecological practices aimed at soil regeneration, sustainable water management and reduced use of chemical inputs, with a strong emphasis on the economic empowerment of women and youth. The second component supports innovation and enterprise development through structured incubation and pre incubation pathways. Selected businesses receive mentoring, specialised technical assistance, access to co working and processing spaces established through previous initiatives, and tailored financial mechanisms to facilitate initial investments and business consolidation, promoting youth entrepreneurship and sustainable economic inclusion. The third component aims to improve the organisation, infrastructure and hygiene standards of urban markets and decentralised selling points through baseline assessments, light infrastructure upgrades, training on hygiene and waste management, the use of checklists aligned with international food safety standards and measures to strengthen local market governance, making markets safer, more accessible and more attractive for vendors and consumers. Direct beneficiaries include micro, small and medium enterprises, cooperatives, agroecological producers, processors, market vendors, women entrepreneurs, young people and vulnerable individuals, including persons with disabilities and internally displaced people. Indirect beneficiaries are the broader communities of Ouagadougou and the municipalities of the Greater Ouaga, who will benefit from improved food availability, better product quality and more dynamic local markets.
