Description

The initiative aims to contribute to food security and to the sustainable recovery of the Syrian agricultural sector by strengthening the wheat and olive value chains. Within this framework, the operational strategy is structured into three interconnected components. The first focuses on institutional and technical-scientific strengthening, aiming to enhance the capacities of the MAAR and related institutions in the research, production and certification of quality seeds and olive oil through training on genetic improvement, quality control and seed and oil analysis, the rehabilitation and equipment of GCSAR, GOSM and Olive Bureau laboratories, the development of guidelines and protocols for certification and traceability, and technical exchanges with Italian institutions. The second component supports productive reactivation and farmers, with the objective of increasing the productivity and quality of wheat and olive crops and fostering the economic recovery of rural communities; it includes the distribution of certified seeds, seedlings and small machinery through a cost-recovery model, the introduction of good agronomic practices and efficient irrigation systems, demonstration activities on more resilient varieties, continuous technical assistance throughout the crop cycle, and support for the creation of women’s and youth-led microenterprises along the value chain. The third component focuses on awareness, visibility and governance, improving knowledge, coordinated management and communication of results through workshops, scientific outreach campaigns, communication materials dedicated to the Italian Cooperation, the functioning of the Steering Committee and Technical Secretariat, and the implementation of the RBM monitoring and evaluation system.
