Description

The initiative aims to strengthen resilience and sustainable recovery in Syria by improving access to electricity, a key element for ensuring the continuity of basic public services, supporting economic recovery, and enhancing living conditions. The project involves the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Deir Ali power plant, located about 30 km south of Damascus, one of the country’s main energy infrastructures supplying electricity to large areas in southern Syria (Rural Damascus, Daraa, Quneitra, and As-Suwayda). Implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and carried out by UNDP, the intervention includes the provision and installation of urgent spare parts and technical components for the generation units, an assessment of the plant’s operational status, and training for technical staff responsible for maintenance and management. The activities aim to restore the full functionality of the turbines in the “Extension 2” section, increasing generation capacity by approximately 40 MW and improving the overall efficiency and reliability of the national electricity system. The project makes a significant contribution to the stability and resilience of Syria’s energy sector by ensuring a more regular electricity supply and reducing the risk of prolonged outages that undermine essential public services such as healthcare, education, and water provision.
