Description
The COMPAS project will be implemented in Ghana by the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), in collaboration with the University of Ghana and the NGO Doctors with Africa CUAMM. The overall objective is to contribute to improving the provision of services within Ghana’s public healthcare system. To this end, it aims to increase the proportion of the population with access to essential health services from 45.2% to 47%, and to raise the “healthy” life expectancy at birth from 57.9 years to 60 years. The specific objective is to strengthen the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of biomedical technology management and maintenance processes at both hospital and national healthcare system levels, through three key results: 1. Updating Ghana’s regulatory framework standards, policies, and guidelines for biomedical equipment management, ensuring that each facility is equipped with technologies appropriate to its role, while avoiding shortages or unjustified over-supply. 2. Implementing updated, sustainable, and secure mechanisms for the evaluation, procurement, management, monitoring, and maintenance of equipment in the project’s target hospitals (criteria for assessing new technologies, more efficient and transparent tendering procedures, predictive approaches, preventive and corrective maintenance protocols, intervention traceability systems, evaluation of obsolescence, and proper disposal of equipment). 3. Enhancing the University of Ghana’s educational offer in relation to healthcare infrastructure management. The project adopts an approach that can be sustainably replicated across the entire territory of Ghana. The direct beneficiaries are the target hospitals, inspectors of the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), technicians responsible for hospital equipment management and maintenance, officials of the Ghana Ministry of Health who will play an active role in adapting and updating management systems, as well as university professors and students, who will benefit from PhD scholarships and new credit-bearing courses.
