Description
The project aims at ensuring equitable and sustainable access to safe and affordable drinking water and improved hygiene services in the arid and semi-arid rural lands (ASAL) of Dodoma and Manyara Regions. The project’s impact is to improve the social and public health condition and the resilience, including climate changes and hazards, of the population in the target regions. In Tanzania, only 64% of households have access to at least basic drinking water service , 55% to basic sanitation , and 48% of the population to basic hygiene practices . In Manyara and Dodoma regions, access to water is still below the national average (50% and 63% respectively) while access to basic hygiene services stands at 46.1% and 59.5% respectively . The intervention is aligned to the strategic priorities outlined in the nation’s “Five-Year Medium Term Strategic Plan 2019/20-2023/24”, Water Sector Development Programme Phase Three (WSDP III) 2022/23 – 2025/26 and the National Water Policy 2002 (Version 2025) of Ministry of Water, which recognize the importance to enhance the provision and sustainability of water and sanitation services and to foster human capital in the WASH sector. The intervention logic is structured towards three main pillars. The first pillar aims at improving the provision of safe and resilient water supply in the rural areas, using innovative technologies (Result 1). The second pillar of the strategy will focus on strengthening the institutional capacity (Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, the Community Based Water Supply Organizations and local authorities) to manage water and sanitation services effectively, financially sustainably, and in a participatory manner. (Result 2). The last pillar of the intervention logic will focus on ensuring the availability of improved hygiene and sanitation services and the promotion of hygiene in schools, healthcare facilities, and public community areas (Result 3). The project will be implemented by an Italian Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) selected through a competitive call for proposal and in partnership with local partners and from “Italian System”. An inclusive and gender-sensitive approach will ensure that girls, women, persons with disabilities, and the elderly have access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation services, using schools and health facilities as entry points to reach the most vulnerable.
