Description

This initiative seeks to generate the enabling environment for scaling sustainable land use practices and gender-equitable, diversified livelihood options that address direct and underlying drivers of deforestation, restore degraded Miombo woodland landscapes, and promote sustainable natural resource management, while delivering sustainable development co-benefits such as food and nutrition security in Zambia’s Northwestern and Copperbelt regions. To achieve this, the project will strengthen the capacities of government entities, communities and rural farming households to monitor both land use and restoration activities at community level (Component 1). The initiative also fosters land restoration and sustainable agriculture with a strong emphasis on empowering women, youth, indigenous peoples and marginalized groups (Component 2). It strengthens the adoption of diversified and sustainable livelihoods by supporting market access, finance and agri-technological solutions for products such as legumes, honey, mushrooms and edible insects (Component 3). It addresses underlying deforestation drivers, such as charcoal demand, by co-developing value chain environmental upgrading strategies (Component 4). Participatory and community approaches ensure active beneficiary engagement in planning, decision-making and monitoring, and subsequent up taking of project results. The initiative supports Zambia’s national strategies on restoration, climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation, and contributes to achieving SDGs on poverty, gender equality, climate action, and life on land.
