Description

The Project, located in the Jimma area of Ethiopia, aims to improve water and soil resilience in the Boye Lake catchment through an integrated approach that combines advanced technical interventions and community participation. The initiative focuses on reducing soil erosion and increasing water infiltration, promoting aquifer recharge and ensuring sustainable access to water for local communities; at the same time, the Project will ensure the reduction of sediment transported to Boye Lake. Activities include the implementation of soil conservation works, the rehabilitation of degraded areas, the construction of small reservoirs and rural water systems, as well as the promotion of agro-forestry practices to improve soil fertility and diversify sources of income. The project actively involves local communities, with a particular focus on women, youth and vulnerable groups, through participatory committees and training programs. A gender analysis is integrated into the activities to ensure equity and inclusion. The strategy is based on innovative technologies, such as drones and hydrogeological and hydrological modelling, supported by proven methodologies for sustainable management of natural resources. The initiative is aligned with Ethiopian national development plans and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.
