Description

DIRECT MANAGEMENT - Kenya faces a major food security and public health challenge due to widespread mycotoxin contamination, particularly aflatoxins, in staple crops like maize and peanuts. Up to 40% of maize—mostly grown and consumed by smallholders—is affected, causing disease and economic loss. Aflatoxins, linked to cancer and other health risks, thrive in Kenya’s tropical climate and are worsened by climate change. Current control measures are fragmented and insufficient. To address this, the proposed Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin Eradication in Food and Feed (CEMET) will be established at the University of Nairobi with support from AICS. It will operate under three pillars: (1) Research—developing advanced detection, prevention, and surveillance methods in collaboration with Italian partners; (2) Innovation—refining and commercializing technologies like solar dryers, AI-based monitors, and storage solutions; and (3) Stakeholder Engagement—providing policy advise to Government, training farmers, involving industry, and informing policy. CEMET will upgrade lab capacity, validate tools in real conditions, promote startups, and establish demonstration sites.
