Description
The Global Agricultural Heritage Systems Program supported by Italy since 2020 aims to support efforts to conserve the biodiversity of traditional agricultural systems and improve their sustainability. The main objective of the program are:1.Develop an outreach strategy to ensure broad awareness and understanding of GIAHS among stakeholders, including policy makers, private sector actors, and consumers;2.Develop the voluntary GIAHS information label, along with specific guidelines for its use, and present it during the GIAHS ceremony in October 2025, taking advantage of FAO’s 80th anniversary celebration and the 100 GIAHS milestone.3.Establish a monitoring and compliance system: develop a monitoring framework to verify that GIAHS systems meet conservation requirements, integrating a digital reporting tool to collect usable data. The expertise of Italian research institutions, such as CREA, will be crucial. 4.Capacity building of local communities: provide technical assistance and training to empower local producers in the evaluation, management and enhancement of the GIAHS label, while ensuring compliance with monitoring requirements.
