Description

The initiative aims to preserve and enhance four monumental buildings located in the historic center of the city of Odesa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site currently listed as endangered. The selected buildings—the Odesa Regional Philharmonic, the National Art Museum, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art, and the Literary Museum—represent architectural, historical, and cultural heritage of national importance, now severely damaged due to ongoing conflict. The project is part of Italy’s broader commitment to Ukraine’s cultural and social reconstruction, supporting the restoration of museum, educational, and artistic functions and strengthening the collective identity of the population. The initiative will return to the local community and international visitors safe, accessible, and technologically updated spaces, reinforcing urban resilience through culture. The intervention includes architectural restoration, upgrading of building systems, and improved accessibility, with particular attention to the needs of persons with disabilities. Local labor and craftspeople will be involved, contributing to job creation and revitalization of the cultural economy. The project also serves as a replicable model through documentation of adopted methodologies, digital heritage tools, and collaboration with universities and training institutions. This initiative directly contributes to Goal 11, Target 11.4, by strengthening efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural heritage, and to Goal 8, Target 8.9, by promoting inclusive and sustainable cultural tourism with positive impacts on local employment and the creative economy. read more close
