Description

The initiative entails the restoration and adaptive reuse of two historic buildings located in the monumental center of Odesa, both recognized as cultural heritage sites of national importance and included in the urban area inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger. The targeted buildings are: the former Bank of the Ashkinazi United Trading House, today known as the Wedding Palace, located at 4 Rishelievska Street, and the historic Sontag House on 6 Primorsky Boulevard, which is planned to host the future Cultural Heritage Management Center. Damaged by the armed conflict and years of neglect, the buildings suffer from structural instability, water infiltration, and severe architectural decay, and are currently not accessible to the public. The project foresees integrated interventions, including structural reinforcement, conservative restoration of façades and original decorative elements, modernization of internal systems (electrical, fire safety, climate control), and the installation of energy-efficient technologies. Accessibility improvements for persons with disabilities, such as ramps, lifts, and inclusive facilities, are a core part of the design. In line with the principles of sustainable urban development and post-conflict resilience, the initiative aims to return safe, inclusive, and identity-rich public spaces to the local community, generating lasting cultural, educational, and economic impacts. Once restored, the buildings will host exhibitions, events, and educational programs, promoting active civic engagement, vocational training for young local professionals in the field of restoration, and the revitalization of cultural tourism. The project thus contributes to the safeguarding of heritage, social cohesion, and the broader reconstruction of Ukraine. read more close
