Description
In line with the "Three-year Programming and Policy Planning Document 2021-2023" of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the Initiative aims to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 by improving the quality of and access to pediatric surgical training in Uganda, while empowering the vulnerable Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 7 female population, including mothers of pediatric patients, through vocational training. This multifaceted approach addresses identified needs such as the lack of pediatric specialists and the economic vulnerability of women, with the goal of helping to improve both the preparedness of professionals providing pediatric surgical services and the economic status of Ugandan families. The objective will be achieved through a strategy that integrates together several levels of intervention, with an eye to responding as thoroughly as possible to the complex and multidimensional needs of the Country. In light of the main needs identified in the context, EMERGENCY has developed a two-pronged approach: 1. The provision of training to medical, surgical, nursing and other “allied professions” students and junior professionals within EMERGENCY’s Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe, a facility officially recognized by the Ugandan Ministry of Health as a high-level specialized training center. The specialized training programs developed by EMERGENCY will ensure the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge and through mentorship between trained professionals and residents/students. 2. The provision of vocational training to Ugandan women from disadvantaged backgrounds (including some mothers of Children's Surgical Hospital patients) to improve their socioeconomic status, leveraging the expertise of the local partner, The Remnant Generation, in skills development. The involvement of the Italian ISMU ETS Foundation, another project partner, will facilitate women’s job placement through innovative workshops on service quality, transferability, and will further strengthen the The Remnant Generation partner’s capacity and, on women's vulnerability management and expansion of their networks. Key target groups include medical, nursing and other health professions students from Makerere University in Kampala, another local partner, young medical professionals in need of further specialized training from both Italy and other countries in Africa such as Sudan, Kenya, etc. (with the aim of strengthening North-South and SouthSouth collaboration), and vulnerable women identified by local partner The Remnant Generation and EMERGENCY’s social workers. Collaborations with Makerere University, The Remnant Generation, and Fondazione ISMU ETS ensure a holistic approach, integrating training and socio-economic empowerment, promoting sustainable development, and improving the employability of both health workers and vulnerable women. This collaborative effort aims to simultaneously improve specialized vocational training and employment development in Uganda, with a lasting impact on the community.
