Description

The initiative is based on a challenge: to turn the negative effects of climate change into an opportunity to increase effectiveness and sustainability of the local agro-food system producing a positive impact on the environment, the people, and the local economy. The final objective of the initiative is to contribute to mitigating the link between environmental degradation and hunger in the event of extreme weather events - floods - in Chad, by reducing the negative socio-economic impact on the local community (SDG 15.3). This need arises from the identified needs in the intervention areas where fluvial floods, caused by heavy rains, constantly occur, not in an emergency or occasional manner. This triggers: a continuous halt in local agricultural production with drastic effects on the availability and quality of food for auto-consumption and selling purposed; the reduction of the main economic income; environmental degradation due to the dispersion of crops, materials, and destruction of private shelters into the environment. Currently, no techniques or practices are employed by the local population to mitigate or reduce the effects of floods on agricultural production. This puts the availability of food, its quality and safety, environmental protection, and the economic development of the areas at risk. Therefore, the initiative aims to: increase agricultural productivity and the income of small-scale food producers through safe access to productive inputs, knowledge, markets, and value-added opportunities (SDG 2.3); ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, help protect ecosystems through the use of renewable energy (OECD/DAC sector 23231), strengthen the capacity to adapt to climate change and extreme weather conditions (floods), and progressively improve soil quality (SDG 2.4); reduce post-harvest food losses caused by floods (SDG 12.3) through the introduction of storage and agro-food transformation infrastructures that are flood resistant and built with environmental frindly techniques (OECD/DAC sector 31191). This will be achieved by enhancing the scientific and technical capacities of the local institutions and communities towards more sustainable production models (SDG 12.a). The initiative also promotes the production of crop varieties with higher nutritional value (OECD/DAC nutrition policy objective). Thus, the initiative will generate a positive impact on People, Planet, and Partnership (Agenda 2030). This would be possible thanks to a continuous interaction, co-sharing of competences and experiences between Italian civil society organizations (INTERSOS) and the local civil society (ADRAH, local NGO), local institutional partners (ANADER, CECOQDA), and an Italian technical partner of national standing (CNR-IBS). The target group of the initiative is composed by 1.500 families of agricultural producers (10.563 people) and 63 organizations in the villages of Ndou and Kabe (N’djamena) and the village of Koundoul (Chari-Baguirmi) in Chad. read more close
