Description

The initiative aims to address health and environmental challenges in Mozambique, specifically focusing on the provinces of Nampula and Zambezia, which are highly populated and particularly vulnerable to climate change. The intervention's general objective is to mitigate the negative impacts of human activities on biodiversity and promote sustainable energy systems through an integrated One Health approach that considers the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. The project also continues to build on a longstanding collaboration with civil society and local consortium institutions, a partnership that has enabled thorough and targeted local needs assessments, identifying priority needs. The aim is to respond to these needs in harmony with national and international priorities, contributing to the United Nations' Agenda 2030 goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages), and SDG 15 (Life on Land); and also supporting the implementation of the Rio Conventions, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The increasing human pressure on the environment and biodiversity, combined with often unsustainable agricultural practices, contributes to the rise of climate change-related phenomena and waterborne, vector-borne, and zoonotic diseases. The overall goal of the initiative is therefore to mitigate and compensate for the impacts of human activities on biodiversity by promoting sustainable energy systems and improving the management of climate change-related diseases through a One Health approach. This approach holistically addresses global health challenges, recognizing the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. The intervention strategy includes transforming agricultural practices, restoring and protecting mangrove forests, adopting improved breeding techniques, and utilizing renewable energies essential for local climate change adaptation and soil improvement.
