Description

The project "SANté: Food Security and Nutrition in Burkina Faso," lasting 36 months, aims to contribute to reducing food and nutritional insecurity in the Boulmiougou Health District, Central Region. It ensures safe and stable access to a varied and nutrient-rich diet for the local population, particularly pregnant and lactating women and children under five years old, making the environment-nutrition-health nexus concrete. The increase in population (the area is a destination for internally displaced people), rising food prices, low processing of local products, and the decrease in pastures and cultivable land are the origin of a condition of food insecurity, caused by a diet lacking in nutrients and diversity, inadequate feeding practices for infants and children under five, and poor access to sanitation services. Therefore, to address the multiple food and nutritional needs, this initiative will support the most vulnerable population of the Boulmiougou Health District through targeted actions in the rural villages of Tanghin-Dassouri, Komki-Ipala, and Komsilga and the non lotis (informal settlements) of Ouagadougou. For the nutrition component, the project will support the activities of health centers and community health workers, both responsible for the prevention, identification, and treatment of MAM cases at the health facility level and community level through nutritional education sessions. Improving the mutual connection between health centers and the community will contribute to making the center a reliable reference for child health and strengthen the management and follow-up of malnutrition at the community level to ensure greater adherence to treatments and the implementation of good nutritional practices. The project intends to implement the mentoring strategy at both clinical and community levels to improve the quality of health services in the prevention and management of malnutrition. Community agents (ASBC) will strengthen the coverage of the integrated package of services for infant and child nutrition at the community level by organizing woman-to-woman support groups (GASPA - groupes d’apprentissage et d’appui aux pratiques de l’ANJE). From both a curative and preventive perspective, the initiative aims to act on the socio-economic level of families, improving their ability to access varied and quality food. Community gardens and multifunctional nutritional gardens will be established to develop sustainable and nutrition-sensitive agriculture to improve the nutritional status and food security of local populations. Small-scale poultry and small ruminant farming will be promoted to start Income Generating Activities, as well as "hydroponic" cultivation, ensuring constant, organic, low-cost, and water-efficient production. A production unit for high-nutrient-value products, including iron-enriched flours as one of the main complementary foods, will be established. Products from the productive unit, as well as other ocal high-nutrient-value products, will be promoted regionally through the organization of a festival for this purpose. The initiative will be carried out through a strong partnership primarily between MMI – Medicus mundi Italia and SOSSIBF – SOS Sahel International Burkina Faso, as well as with local health institutions (the Boulmiougou health district) and community-based organizations already active locally (ADAPMI).
