Description
In the territory of the Municipality of Maxixe (Province of Inhambane, Mozambique), the population has limited and unsafe access to potable water sources, and a significant amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) is not properly disposed of due to the geographical and demographic dispersion characteristics of the area, lack of resources, and insufficient investments in the planning and organization of a system adequate to provide safe drinking water to the entire population and manage the volume of waste generated. Moreover, the population has limited awareness and knowledge of the risks and best practices necessary to prevent diseases related to the use of contaminated water and poor hygiene (malaria, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid fever, hepatitis A, and other infections). All this generates pollution, public health problems, and environmental degradation. In response to these needs, the initiative proposes a two-pronged intervention: strengthening and improving water service delivery and urban solid waste management systems in 19 urban and peri-urban neighborhoods of the Municipality of Maxixe. This aims to increase sustainable access to potable water sources for the population and increase the amount of municipal solid waste properly disposed of by citizens, collected, and managed at the municipal level, promoting a culture of environmental responsibility among citizens. The expansion of the water supply network, the creation of new supply systems in peri-urban areas, and the connection of new users aim to ensure that a larger portion of the population has access to safe potable water sources, reducing the distance needed to fetch water. Improving the water resource management system aims to promote greater control of the distribution network, also for minimizing waste and increasing system efficiency. To this end, the following are planned: installation of chlorine dosing systems, establishment of a laboratory for microbiological and chemical water analyses, installation of GIS software for monitoring the continuity of distribution and compliance with quality and safety standards of the supplied water, and training and capacity building of local technical staff. For increasing the amount of properly disposed, collected, and managed municipal solid waste, the goal is to help create a more efficient and sustainable waste management system. To this end, the following are planned: expansion and innovation of the MSW collection system; improvement of MSW landfill deposit and storage systems; capacity building of local technicians for improving the MSW collection and disposal system; monitoring the effectiveness of the waste collection system and the landfill safety intervention. Concurrently, target groups will be sensitized to increase their knowledge of the risks related to improper water use, best practices to prevent and reduce the incidence of diseases, and promote proper waste disposal by users. The Municipality of Brescia, together with Medicus Mundi Italia (MMI), which has been operating in the Province of Inhambane since 2008, identified this call as an opportunity to support the Municipality of Maxixe in enhancing the efficiency of water supply and municipal solid waste collection and disposal systems in its territory, forming a partnership consisting of Italian partners (UNIBS/CeTAmb, A2A Ciclo Idrico, Aprica, and A2A Ambiente) and local partners (Águas da Região Sul and UNISAVE), capable of bringing expertise and specific technical-scientific skills in both areas of intervention. Approximately 100,000 people, of all ages, residing in the 19 target neighborhoods will directly benefit from the intervention.
