Description
The project "Support actions for the implementation of tunisian organic districts" aims to continue and consolidate the positive results achieved through the previous intervention, "Preliminary Actions for the Establishment of bioterritories in Tunisia." This initiative, managed by CIHEAM Bari in collaboration with the General Directorate of Organic Agriculture (DGAB) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Maritime Fisheries (MARHPM), will conclude in November 2024 and has laid the groundwork for the current proposal through feasibility, legal, and financial studies. In line with the 2021-2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the second phase of the project seeks to develop the agricultural sector by promoting organic farming through the creation oforganic districts. Managed by the same bodies as the first phase to ensure continuity and consistency, the initiative relies on a participatory approach and integrated, sustainable development, with the aim of preserving natural resources and enhancing local sociocultural specifics. The main objective is to promote organic agriculture in Tunisia as a tool for socioeconomic growth, highlighting its multifunctional role and its synergy with other sectors of the local economy. The five pilot sites, selected through a study conducted in 2013-2014 by Ali Chelbi Consulting (ACC) and CIHEAM Bari and funded by DGAB, are: Hazoua (Tozeur), Kesra (Siliana), Majel Bel Abbes (Kasserine), Haouaria (Nabeul), and Sejnène (Bizerte). The initiative is structured around five main thematic areas: economic, legal, technical assistance and training, sociocultural, and environmental. The goal is to activate primary and complementary supply chains in the intervention areas, providing both material and immaterial support. It is estimated that approximately 2,200 people will directly benefit from the project, while around 120,000 people benefit indirectly in the five selected areas.
