Description
The initiative aims to contribute to the implementation of projects under the ICRC 2024 Special Appeal on "Disability and Mine Action" in three different beneficiary countries, namely Afghanistan, Mali and Somalia, through specialized health care and socio-economic inclusion activities for people with disabilities, especially victims of landmines and other unexploded ordnance.Somalia Component: The ICRC will work to make physical rehabilitation more accessible to people with disabilities in Somalia. It will continue to support three physical rehabilitation centers run by the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (in Galcaio, Hargeisa, and Mogadishu), aiming to address shortages of supplies and qualified staff. The ICRC will collaborate with healthcare personnel from the clinics run by the National Society and the hospitals supported by the ICRC to standardize patient referral procedures for further care. It will strengthen its partnership with an organization for people with disabilities, in order to gain its support in promoting the social inclusion of people with disabilities, and will help ensure that this organization’s staff can carry out activities for people receiving rehabilitative care. Physiotherapists, prosthetists/orthotists, and other professionals will receive support to pursue further studies and advanced training. With the 2024 contribution, the ICRC will: i) provide materials and equipment, technical and logistical support, and staff training, benefiting approximately 7,300 people with disabilities at the three aforementioned physical and orthopedic rehabilitation centers; ii) cover transportation, food, and accommodation costs for a selected number of people seeking assistance at these centers; iii) refer eligible patients to microeconomic activities; iv) enable some people with disabilities and their coaches to participate in a wheelchair basketball training camp, provide financial support to an amputee football organization so that some players can be equipped with crutches (all benefiting 163 people with disabilities and their coaches); v) organize a training-of-trainers course on disability inclusion to enable participants to support efforts to promote the social inclusion of people with disabilities; vi) provide physiotherapists, orthopedic technicians, orthotists, prosthetists, National Society staff, and healthcare workers with access to training courses, scholarships, or mentoring.
