Description

The initiative aims to strengthen Syria's public health surveillance systems to ensure a rapid response to epidemics and enhance the resilience of the national health system. The strategy is structured around three key outputs: (i) Strengthening surveillance and response by enhancing the Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS), supporting rapid response teams, and conducting surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases; (ii) Improving laboratory capacities by rehabilitating laboratories in Damascus and Dara'a, providing essential equipment, and training staff; (iii) Developing a digital surveillance system by digitizing epidemiological data through DHIS2 and providing IT equipment. These actions, to be implemented over 24 months, aim to ensure a timely and effective response to epidemics, thereby improving public health outcomes. The initiative will be implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO), the lead agency for the Health cluster in Syria's humanitarian response. Upon approval by the Comitato Congiunto, a Contribution Agreement will be signed between the Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS) of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) and the WHO. Italy will provide a financial contribution of 3 million euros, disbursed in two installments for 2024 and 2025. This initiative aligns with the Syria Humanitarian Response Plan, the UN Strategic Framework for Syria, the WHO's “Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW14) 2025-2028,” and Italy's commitments made at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit, the Grand Bargain, and the eighth Brussels Conference in 2024. read more close
