Description

As part of efforts to support the Government of Iraq in the Southern region, IOM aims to contribute to addressing the drivers and effects of migration in Basra city by increasing access to healthcare and mental health and psychological support services. The project will support internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities in Basra governorate. Basra governorate has historically faced multiple challenges relating to lack of basic health services and infrastructure, political instability, security issues among others, and is currently hosting, according to IOM data (April–June 2022) more than 5,000 IDPs and returnees. The complex migration landscape of the governorate combined with such challenges adds pressure Basra on for the provision of essential services, such as healthcare, at the time where the need has increased following Covid 19 pandemic.As such, IOM, in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Directorates of Health, will aim to improve the capacity to deliver health care services and prevent, prepare for– and respond to health emergencies. IOM will further aim to enhance improved health literacy and health seeking behaviour of individuals and their communities. IOM will provide mental health related specialised services and improve capacity of key community members and organizations to identify and address these special needs. During the three years implementation there will be the opportunity to replicate and disseminate lessons learnt and actions deemed effective towards a bigger number of locations. read more close
