Description
the specific objective of the project is to maximize the effectiveness and sustainability of integrated health systems in the two malaria-endemic regions of Burkina Faso, enhancing their impact, resilience and response capacity through coordinated actions that improve community-based services and promote applied research. In particular, the initiative aims, on the one hand, to consolidate the quality, equity, and continuity of malaria prevention and care services at the community and territorial level, with particular attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and children under five, and on the other hand, to develop and validate an innovative scientific approach for the integrated control of Anopheles vectors, capable of reinforcing national malaria control strategies. The project is structured around two complementary results: Result 1 strengthens the effectiveness and quality of community and health-care services in 420 villages across the Sud-Ouest and Cascades regions by improving household-level monitoring, diagnosis, local governance and larval-source management, through the training of more than 900 community actors and the establishment of 31 sanitation brigades; Result 2 develops and validates an applied research protocol in public health aimed at testing an integrated vector control approach based on targeted swarm spraying and larval source management (LSM). The process is articulated through coordinated phases of scientific design, institutional and community participation, field experimentation, and capitalization of results. Through this dual operational and scientific pathway, the project contributes to the generation of applied evidence and operational tools for strengthening community and health systems, promoting a replicable and sustainable model of participatory innovation. The initiative is implemented in partnership between Progettomondo, the Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS), the University of Camerino and the Permanent Secretariat for Malaria Elimination (SP/Palu), in close collaboration with the Regional Health Directorates (DRS), ensuring institutional ownership, scientific rigour and strong community anchorage. The target groups include over 1,800 community actors (ASBC, Laafi Ton, CVLP, OBC, community leaders); 42 district and municipal supervisors and 99 ICPs across 8 districts and 99 health centres; 20,801 pregnant women and 83,930 children under five from 420 villages. The entire population of the 99 health areas, totaling 416,019 individuals, is considered as indirect beneficiaries. Consistent with the Stratégie Nationale de Lutte contre le Paludisme 2021–2025 and the WHO Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016–2030, the initiative contributes to building a more effective, inclusive and resilient health system, capable of integrating scientific innovation, institutional governance and community participation, and thus advancing the global goal of malaria elimination in Burkina.
