Description
To address individual needs rather than approaching each disease vertically, a new intervention is proposed to strengthen the integration between communities and the National Health Service (NHS) in the fight against the three diseases and to sustainably improve access to and quality of care for every rural community in the districts of Morrumbene, Homoine, Funhalouro, Massinga, and Panda. For the achievement of RA1, strengthening the NHS’s capacity to provide integrated interventions against HIV, TB, and malaria in the five districts, the project proposes training and on-the-job mentoring of health workers on community strategies of the National Control Programs for the three diseases, the implementation of Brigadas Móveis Integradas (integrated mobile health teams) as multiple decentralized services in parallel—a strategy already successfully adopted jointly by the Provincial Health Directorate of Inhambane (DPSI) and MMI—and the introduction of innovative approaches for community-based decentralized prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the three endemics. RA2 focuses on strengthening the key role of communities and community actors in combating AIDS, TB, and malaria through capacity building, prevention, case follow-up, and participatory community awareness for prevention and treatment. The partnership values the co-participation of DPSI as the main counterpart for achieving both results, the University of Brescia particularly for RA1, and the local association Kuhlula for RA2. The project’s target population includes 39,787 children aged 0–5 years, 22,027 children and adolescents aged 5–14 years, and 121,133 adolescents over 14 and adults, for a total of nearly 183,000 people.
