Description

The 2P2M project co-finances the Sahel Joint Programme in Response to the Challenges of COVID-19, Conflict and Climate Change (SD3C), a regional programme involving the five G5 Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad) and Senegal, implemented by the three UN agencies of the Rome-based hub. The overall objective is to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable rural women in the Sahel region in a sustainable manner, in order to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 crisis, conflicts, and climate change. The specific objective of the 2P2M project is to strengthen the livelihoods of small-scale producers, particularly women and young people living in cross-border areas. The project will target 900 families and approximately 5,450 women and young beneficiaries over a two-year period, with particular attention to the most vulnerable groups and the adoption of sustainable production practices and social cohesion approaches. The programme is structured into two technical components and one coordination component. Component 1: Increasing agroforestry productivity and production through climate-resilient agricultural practices and technologies. Activities will focus on improving productive assets and resilience, capacity strengthening, and peacebuilding. Component 2: Economic integration through interventions aimed at strengthening cross-border markets and securing border transactions, including through the use of digital financial services. All planned activities place special emphasis on gender issues and youth. Component 3 is dedicated to policy dialogue, project management, and coordination. The project provides coordinated and pragmatic solutions on technical and policy aspects, which will be implemented through (i) the specific geographic focus on cross-border areas, (ii) the cross-border nature of activities and the resolution of conflicts between farmers and herders, and (iii) the strong partnership with the G5 Sahel Secretariat, which chairs the steering committee of the SD3C at the regional level. The management of the initiative will be shared with another project financed by IFAD (PROGRES), which, under the supervision of the Ministry of Rural Development, will ensure programme coordination and management, including institutional oversight, the steering committee, and operational coordination. read more close
