Description

The project aims contributing to the reduction of vulnerability and food insecurity by strengthening the enhancement of the potential of the agro-pastoral zones of central-eastern Mauritania. The intervention intends to contribute to the modernization of the agro-pastoral sector of Mauritania in general and in particular of the Hodh el Chargui, Hodh el Gharbi, Assaba and Tagant regions. It aims to structure agro-pastoral production systems in an inclusive and sustainable way, in the 4 regions involved, thus contributing to the socio-economic development of the country in general. The agro-pastoral development strategy must guarantee a fair distribution of added value, female participation, environmental sustainability and must have a positive impact on the nutritional safety of producers and their families. The implementing strategy includes a community-based approach, with a direct involvement of the youth and a specific attention on gender issues and women participation. Ensuring a direct participation of local people and a bottom-up approach for the management of the production and the use of the soil will not only increase the level of local awareness, but also enhance the sense of community in those regions. The project will be implemented for 3 years, from the starting date. Direct beneficiaries are about 150 communities and groups of farmers and agro-pastors for a total of about 7,500 people of which 30% are women. Direct beneficiaires are different from those of the phase I in order to spread the benefits over a larger part of the population of the 4 target regions. The indirect beneficiaries are the rural populations and the communities and associations of farmers and agro-pastors of the 4 regions concerned. The purposes of the project are possible thanks to its technical and economic viability, and social and environmental sustainability. The action, in fact, develops on simple agricultural techniques, successfully implemented in other projects. The beneficiaries are directly involved and enriched, thanks to the improvement and diversification of the local production. Furthermore, it has a positive impact on the environment, as it reinforces the soil and facilitates access and diversification of agricultural production. As a result of the direct inclusion of women and the youth, the social and gender dimension of the project increases the overall sustainability. Finally, it as also a community-based approach designed to increase social cohesion and reduce conflict. read more close
