Description

CSO CALL | The second phase of the initiative builds upon the positive outcomes of the previous one and responds to the request of local counterparts to align with the Government of Kenya’s broader strategy to revitalize the coffee sector. The intervention focuses on farmers, cooperatives, youth, and women, operating across both the upstream and downstream segments of the value chain, while fostering strong synergies with public institutions responsible for research, training, and policy support within the coffee sector. Specifically, the initiative aims, on the one hand, to strengthen local institutions (primarily the Coffee Research Institute - CRI) in certified seed production and in the development of a decentralized and resilient nursery system capable of meeting the growing demand for high-quality coffee seedlings. It also seeks to enhance the efficiency of agricultural support services and improve data and information management across the value chain. On the other hand, the initiative promotes increased productivity and climate resilience through the adoption of sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices, improved soil fertility management, and the promotion of adaptive farming systems. In parallel, it supports the modernization and better management of coffee cooperatives to improve product quality, promote value addition through County-level brands and traceability systems, and strengthen market linkages at local, national, and international levels. Finally, a strong training and capacity-building component (with a particular focus on youth and women) aims to foster local ownership and ensure the long-term sustainability of results. read more close
