Description

The project contributes to SDG 4.1 target in Côte d'Ivoire: by 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes. An ATS led by CSO AVSI Foundation and CSO CeVI registered and operating in the country for many years with other local and Italian partners will implement project activities in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA) and its regional directorates (DRENA) to improve the quality of teaching and learning in 800 elementary school in 18 regions of the country. Despite discrete improvements in primary education in Côte d'Ivoire, with a primary school completion rate of 78.61% and a gross enrollment rate of 100%(2023), there are high needs in the education sector in terms of infrastructure and safety of the school environment, supervision and training of teachers, accessibility of learning materials, insufficient family participation in performance monitoring, and lack of registration of children at the registry office, that is a prerequisite for continuing in school. In line with the needs gathered, previous experiences in the education sector, and meetings with local institutions (MENA and DRENA), the first outcome promotes a safe and suitable school environment for the conduct of educational activities (OECD-DAC sector 11120 - educational facilities and training) by rehabilitating classrooms, toilets and water points, providing sanitary materials in schools and menstrual hygiene kits to preadolescent girls, and training teachers and students on issues useful in creating a safe and non-discriminatory environment, with special attention to disability. The second outcome aims to improve teachers' skills and the quality of education (OECD-DAC Domain 11130 Teacher Training), with trainings on various pedagogical aspects (literacy, numeracy and disability), implementation of mobile libraries and distribution of teaching materials and school kits for teachers and students, remedial courses, and payment of final exam fees for more vulnerable minors. Specific activities will be aimed at parents and school management committees (COGES) to encourage family and community participation in school life for the improvement of students' learning conditions. The third outcome includes joint work with MENA and DRENA to strengthen institutional governance capacities (OECD-DAC Sector: 11110 Educational Policy and Administrative Management) with a focus on the annual review of the primary education system, monitoring of pupil achievements, teacher performance, and the work of pedagogical consultants, organizing extracurricular activities to expand the educational offerings of schools (including Italian language and culture courses), and participation in national and international educational events. Specific support for ministry officials on registering minors at the registry office is also planned. The beneficiaries will be 192,000 male and female pupils, 4,800 teachers, 60,000 parents, 800 COGES, and all the structures of the Ivorian primary education system: 380 officials from the Regional Department of National Education and Literacy (DRENA), the Inspectorate of Preschool and Primary Education (IEPP), and the Ministry. Close collaboration with relevant local authorities will ensure the sharing of best practices and alignment of the intervention with national strategies for primary education, contributing to the strengthening of bilateral relations between Italy and Côte d'Ivoire. read more close
