Description
The 36-month AGROBLUE project will be implemented in four sub-counties (Galole, Tana Delta, Msambweni, Lunga Lunga) of Kwale and Tana River counties in Kenya. The project grew out of the experience gained by ACF, CEFA, the local CSO MWARP and the Milan Politecnico, together with national and county public and private stakeholders in initiatives to promote resilient agricultural models, water access and blue economy. It involves as key stakeholders the public authorities of the two counties (Ministry of Agriculture and Health), to ensure institutional sustainability, and responds to farmers' and fishermen's concerns regarding low productivity, high post-harvest and fishing losses, limited livelihoods, inadequate dietary habits, specific gender barriers, and limited economic participation of women in production activities. The strategy contributes to increasing food security, income, and resilience to food crises caused by natural disasters for the people of Kenya (OG) through the adoption of sustainable small-scale food production systems, artisanal fisheries, and other blue economy-related activities. The proposed practices are resilient, climate-smart Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 8 and gender-appropriate, preventing degradation of natural ecosystems and diversifying sources of income (SO). The objectives are pursued by acting on three main components: (R1) Direct interventions on production assets to introduce improved practices of agroecological integrated food production and artisanal fisheries; improved skills of extension officers to technically assist farmers and fishers; integration of complementary activities such as livestock and beekeeping; and improved access to water ((Water Management and Conservation Systems). These interventions will enable farmers to increase agricultural productivity, diversify crops, produce year-round, and improve the variety and volume of food production for both self-consumption and market. To complement this, raising awareness among communities and youth about the sustainable use of natural resources as a productive asset and reforestation activities of will result in increased food availability and income sources (intermediate outcome). As a final outcome, farming and fishing households will: a) improve their nutritional status-supported by broad-based awareness-raising activities on nutritional issues; b) sell the surplus produced/fished, increasing household incomes and thus being able to acquire supplementary foods and services (health, education). (R2) Consolidation of food and income chains related to agriculture and the blue economy through strengthening management capacities of producer groups, provision of storage and processing facilities and equipment, strengthening micro-entrepreneurship and business management capacities, and access to credit. The transfer of know-how and innovative technologies from Sistema Italia will complete the strategy. Producers and fishers will thus be able to save and invest in their own production activities and thus acquire supplementary services and food and improve household nutrition.(R3) Awareness raising and outreach services to address the causes of malnutrition through the SBCC (Social and Behavior Change Communication) approach, advocacy activities, training of educators and health and social workers, support to the government's BFCI (Baby Friendly Community Initiative) program, community support groups for mothers and caregivers (CMSP and MTMSG), and support to local institutions for the prevention and treatment of child malnutrition. Through these interventions, caregivers will have better skills, institutional and community support, and knowledge on nutrition and hygiene issues. Ultimately, adolescent, pregnant and lactating women and children under 5 years of age will improve their nutrition and nutritional status.
