Description

The primary objective of the REACH programme is to strengthen Kenya’s community health system in an integrated, person centred manner, ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to basic health services and enhancing the system’s capacity to respond to health emergencies. Within a context where primary care coverage remains insufficient in many rural and semi desert regions of the country, REACH aims to recruit, train and equip approximately 3,500 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in the counties of Isiolo, Baringo, West Pokot, Nandi, Tana River, Lamu and Wajir. Each CHP will be responsible for roughly seventy households, with an average of five residents per household, thereby reaching an estimated total of more than 1,225,000 individuals directly. The programme places particular emphasis on the most vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, refugees, internally displaced persons and communities affected by climate related disasters, which constitute a significant segment of the local population. Operational activities involve the development and dissemination of contextualised tools such as operational guidelines, training manuals and digital modules integrated into the national eCHIS platform, as well as the implementation of “training of trainers” (ToT) pathways at county and sub county levels to ensure continuous capacity building. Concurrently, community level improvement teams for CHPs will be established, together with supervision, mentoring and periodic data review mechanisms, to guarantee the quality and consistency of service delivery. A further pillar of the project is the establishment of social accountability mechanisms through the Community Scorecard, fostering active community participation in the design and evaluation of health activities. Finally, REACH seeks to consolidate the role of CHPs within local government planning and budgeting processes by creating a certification and career progression framework and securing jointly financed incentives from the State and county administrations. In doing so, the project intends to transform the community health system into a sustainable, equitable and resilient model capable of meeting both everyday health needs and emergency situations, thereby contributing to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage by 2030. read more close
