Description
This initiative, which is part of a regional UNHCR programme, aims to ensure the protection of Syrian refugees throughout Iraq, both in Federal Iraq and in the Kurdistan Region. The project foresees the provision of legal assistance to Syrian refugees and asylum-seekers who are detained or at risk of arrest on immigration-related grounds: the absence of the country’s adherence to an international legal framework for refugee protection significantly increases the risk of detention and deportation, in violation of the principle of non-refoulement. In parallel, legal assistance will be provided to facilitate access to civil documentation, which is essential for the inclusion of refugees in public services such as health and education. The project also includes a second component dedicated to supporting Syrian refugees who choose to voluntarily return to their country of origin. In this context, and within a procedure established in coordination with local authorities, specific assistance will be provided to ensure that returns are voluntary, safe, and dignified, with particular attention to the protection of women and vulnerable children.
