Description

Save the Children Italy (SC IT) presents for the Call for Initiatives promoted by OSC in Côte d'Ivoire, a 36-month project on Lot 2 - Protection of Minors, entitled Supporting the development of cocoa-producing communities and the protection of child workers in Côte d'Ivoire. The proposed project, starting from consolidated approaches and good practices in the framework of the interventions aimed at fighting child labour in cocoa producing communities (Nawa and Haut Sassandra regions), implemented by Save the Children (SC) in Côte d'Ivoire (2016-2025), with the funding and support of Ferrero, represents a further step in strengthening the protection of minors in the country. Based on the work carried out so far, in fact, the project starts from the assumption that child abuse, which manifests itself in different forms, such as forced labour and child exploitation to guarantee a survival income for families, is closely linked to the socio-economic vulnerability of communities, and therefore aims to act on the deep and multidimensional causes of poverty. Through a holistic approach, the project promotes the creation of an enabling environment for the protection of children, victims or exposed to child labour, by fostering the integrated development of the communities in which they live, including activities aimed at increasing the income of families. The target group consists of at least 80 communities in the western part of the country, the third largest producer and supplier of cocoa for Ferrero, the Montagnes district (Tonkpi and Cavally regions), with the objective of breaking the cycle of poverty (SDG 1, target 1.2.) and reducing, at the same time, the risk factors of child labour (SDG 8, target 8.7.), while promoting the protection of children's rights (SDG 3, target 3.2.), which remains a national priority, as emphasised by the new National Child Protection Policy (PNPE) and which spans several areas. The project will be implemented in close cooperation with community organisations, state and non-state actors, local NGOs and community leaders, responding to three main problems: (i) weaknesses in the system of protection from all forms of abuse, (ii) limited access to diversified sources of income and livelihood by families, and (iii) poor health and nutrition services. The project response revolves around three interconnected areas, corresponding to the OECD-DAC sectors of protection (16070 labour rights; 11220 primary education), livelihoods (16020 Employment creation) and health and nutrition (12261 Health Education). The initiative will contribute to (i) improving and sustaining access to an integrated protection system against all forms of abuse, including child labour and school drop-out; (ii) improving access to diversified sources of income and financial services for beneficiary households, particularly for women and youth; and (iii) improving knowledge of primary care and the quality of health and nutrition services. To this end, SC will work in partnership with the Italian NGO CUAMM (R3), which specialises in the implementation of health and nutrition activities, and with the Ivorian NGO VIF, which has been involved in the protection and empowerment of women and youth for many years, with protection and livelihood activities, including at community level, such as awareness-raising, training and follow-up of mutual aid groups, agricultural training, etc. read more close
