Description
“SUSTAIN-RW: Sustainable Agricultura and Irrigation for Food Security in Rwanda” came from a need in the Gicumbi District, in the Northern Province of the country, which is located in an area at risk of drought. The aim of the project is to improve hilly agriculture and reduce erosion through the creation of terraces and the creation of a high-altitude irrigation system, as well as through specific training on sustainable agriculture and water harvest techniques. The intervention involves achieving a single result, R1: Improving food security by increasing productivity through sustainable and irrigated agriculture. To achieve this, it intends to proceed on several fronts: - rehabilitate a decommissioned hydroelectric dam and create, starting from the reservoir, a pipeline for the irrigation of part of the land. - train the technical staff of the District in sustainable agriculture and water harvest techniques, in order to train the entire agricultural population of the Cell - train District health personnel on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition. An area affected by the intervention will see the construction of terraces on the hillsides in order to stabilize the soil and reduce the risk of erosion. In the same area, an irrigation system will be built which will take advantage of the pre-existing dam. Furthermore, the introduction of new agricultural technologies will allow better agricultural productivity throughout the project area. Specific training will be carried out on water harvesting techniques to increase water saving, which will also be monitored through weather stations. The control units will be equipped with special sensors, which will allow data to be acquired in real time, which will be processed through artificial intelligence, both to monitor the state of crops and for predictive purposes, to help mitigate the damage caused by climate change. Improved seeds will also be distributed, together with the related training carried out through the FFLS method and on-the-job training, on water efficiency techniques and on recent sustainable agriculture techniques. These activities will allow adequate food diversification and encourage the resilience of the beneficiaries' families and the entire community. Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 12 In order to contribute to the prevention of malnutrition and anaemia, specific training will also be carried out for the District health personnel, who in turn will pass it on to the Community Health Workers (CHW) who work in the communities, in order to strengthen their capacity for early diagnostics. With the same concept of cascade transfer of knowledge, the project aims to provide specific agricultural training, both to the technicians of the local partner and to the technicians of the District, who will subsequently be responsible for transmitting it to the Rural Facilitators (RF) and in cascade at community level. MLFM, thanks to its thirty years of experience in the country, will take charge of the implementation of the project and the management of the partnership, in collaboration with Imbaraga Farmers Organization, with which it has been collaborating for years on agricultural projects on the issues of food security and sustainable development, which will carry out agricultural training on the field. While the Departments of Engineering and Agriculture of the University of Bolzano will provide their technical knowledge both on the executive design of the irrigation system and on advanced training in the agricultural sector. The partnership is also made up of two private companies which will provide their know-how respectively on the use of applied Artificial Intelligence, Maggioli Spa, and on the use and maintenance of irrigation systems, Nardon Srl. The presence of the Gicumbi District in the partnership will guarantee the project adequate on-site support and will play a fundamental role in the sustainability of the initiativ
