Description

The ECO-FOOD project intervenes in the West Nile and Lango regions of Uganda to promote sustainable and inclusive development and food security through the promotion of traditional and innovative agri-food supply chains and direct support to the most vulnerable segments of the population. The project has been structured on 3 strategic pillars: the increase of local agricultural production in terms of quantity and quality (R1, OSS 2.3), the development of agricultural value chains from production up to the trade of the processed product also on the international market (R2, OSS 2.4 and 12.3), and direct support to the most vulnerable people to meet their specific needs and ensure their food security (R3, OSS 2.1). The rationale and purpose of the intervention were defined based on the needs assessment carried out in April and May 2024, with involvement of key institutions, communities and local stakeholders, through the creation of appropriate data collection and processing tools to ensure consistency across both target geographic areas. The target groups of the project are mainly small-scale farmers in the districts of Adjumani (West Nile), Kole and Lira (Lango) and vulnerable persons. The farmers will be involved in activities that aim to enhance potentialities of the areas and local communities; vulnerable people will be included within the value chains promoted by the project but will also benefit from the dedicated initiatives targeting their needs. The consortium of partners was structured considering the various links of the value chains and the specific needs of the beneficiary population. CBM, an important international CSO, will take care of the overall coordination of the consortium. The component of agricultural production and value chains will see the involvement as project partners of i) CEFORD, a local organisation among the most important in this sector; ii) C&S, an Italian NGO that runs an agricultural training centre officially recognised by the local authorities and endowed with key skills and logistics for the project; iii) ATTI, an organisation that has developed special tools for the promotion of agricultural development in rural African areas; iv) EAEA, an association of entrepreneurs from East Africa with great experience in business development; and v) MartinoRossi SpA, a private Italian company operating in the agrifood sector at international level. Specific support for the most vulnerable will be implemented by NUDIPU, the most important organisation of persons with disabilities in Uganda, and CBM Uganda, in coordination with CBM Italy, CSOs that have been engaged for decades in the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities Through the project, a more sustainable agriculture (desertification and aid to environment) and adapted to climate change (climate change mitigation and adaptation) will be promoted, that plays a key role in local development but also looks to the international market (trade development) for which there is already a key player in the partnership, MartinoRossi SpA, which will also be among the buyers of the project beneficiaries' production. The agricultural development generated will give the entire beneficiary population access to adequate quality and quantity of food (nutrition) and will be inclusive involving the most vulnerable part of the population (gender equality, disability) with specific activities for these people in consideration of their specific needs. read more close
