Description
The initiative aims to contribute to the food security of agro-pastoral communities in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) of Kenya, aligning with SDG 2, and referring in particular to targets 2.3 and 2.4. Climate change and recurring periods of drought have made the subsistence economy of local communities increasingly vulnerable, whose traditional use of livestock farming is increasingly less sustainable and represents a further factor in soil erosion. The management of scarce natural resources (water, pastures, arable land) also represents one of the main causes of conflict between the populations of the area. The project focuses in particular on the subcounties of Laikipia West and North, involving 41 Self Help Groups and 2 cooperatives active in the area, with the aim of encouraging the development and strengthening of sustainable and climate-resilient agri-food supply chains, which contribute to diversify and increase the sources of income of the target groups. The intervention involves a specific methodology to encourage and monitor the inclusion of vulnerable subjects (subjects with disabilities or mental distress, people with addictions, gender based violence victims) present in target self help groups, in order to guarantee an equal opportunity for inclusion in the production chains. The intervention logic aims to achieve this objective: a) By introducing and consolidating sustainable agriculture, livestock and land management practices, through training in agroecological practices, the introduction of beekeeping, the improvement of cattle and sheep breeding techniques, the creation of model farms that spread replicable technologies of sustainable natural resources management for production. b) By expanding access to water sources and optimizing their management in agriculture, and promoting the restoration of ecosystems with a view to reduce the risks of natural disasters, through an overall hydrogeological analysis that guides the County's future interventions, the creation of infrastructures for rainwater storage and subsoil extraction, the formation of local committees to implement risk reduction practices (DRR plans). c) Strengthening production chains and entrepreneurial initiatives consistent with the climatic and environmental situation of the area, through the rehabilitation and equipping of milk collection centers and their connection with small producers, support for the transformation and marketing of fruit and honey, the start-up of a leather tanning center. This is a complex of interventions carried out according to the principles of permaculture, thus combining adaptation to the climate change situation with the development of production and commercial pportunities that foster biodiversity and environmental protection. The multisectoral intervention logic is addressed through a diversified partnership, coordinated by IPSIA, an NGO with many years of experience in the agri-food sector in Kenya. LPC will provide technical support relating to the agroecological and natural resource management component. Saint Martin will guarantee contact with the SHGs in the Laikipia West area and promote the inclusion of vulnerable subjects, with the support of Fondazione Fontana. Acquifera will develop the hydrogeological analysis of the territory and supervise the water access and management interventions.
