Description
The DUFUNGURE NEZA initiative, "Lets eat well" in Kirundi language, stems from the collaboration of ICU and international partners Associazione Microfinanza e Sviluppo - AMS and UCBM and the local partner COPED, to contribute to the achievement of food security in rural areas in northern Burundi. In particular, it aims at strengthening the resilience of rural populations to food and environmental crises in the villages, hills and municipalities of Kirundo Province. To this end, it proposes a holistic and integrated approach of intervention on three levels corresponding to different geographical extensions, to strengthen existing socio-economic development models and to better respond to the needs of families, cooperatives and MSMEs in the agri-food sector (agriculture, livestock and fishery). In particular, at the level of the family (municipality of Busoni) the initiative intervenes on the change of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP approach) of families to support nutritional self-consumption, so that they can ensure adequate food needs in a healthier environment, through a Community approach that promotes solidarity and social cohesion (Result 1). At the level of cooperatives in the agri-food sector (Kirundo Province), managerial, productive and financial capacities are strengthened to contribute to the professionalisation and improvement of productive capital, so as to better adapt to the challenges of climate change, including through the provision of innovative and climate-smart solutions (Result 2). Finally, at the level of the private sector (Kirundo Province and neighbouring areas), the managerial, technical and financial capacities of MSMEs providing processing/conservation/distribution and marketing services for the agri-food sector, are strengthened so as to increase the availability of food with nutritional and hygienic-sanitary qualities for the benefit of the target population, also through the provision of technical innovative solutions (Result 3).Particular Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 8 attention is given to children <5 years of age particularly affected by chronic malnutrition, which will be monitored to measure the impact of the initiative on food security in the target territory, and to women and young people, who make up 50% of the beneficiaries of the initiative. ICU is the lead applicant, responsible for coordinating the entire initiative with direct responsibility for productive capacity building activities and for innovative technical and climate smart equipment provision; UCBM offers its know-how in nutrition and hygiene in strengthening the knowledge and food hygiene practices of families as well as in nutritional monitoring; AMS brings its expertise on economic development and financial education of families, cooperatives and MSMEs; finally, COPED is responsible for the sustainability of the intervention on the beneficiary families, as well as for the coaching activities aimed at the economic and operational development of cooperatives and MSMEs. The initiative is in line with SDGs: 2 - End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; 8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; 12 - Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; 6 - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, and promotes Food security for the rural population and Sustainability along the agri-food chain in the territory of intervention.
