Description

The project intends to contribute to the development of integrated actions for the strengthening of local food systems in Senegal, by involving public actors in partnership with private actors, universities and other cooperation actors in the definition of food policies at an urban and territorial level. A decentralised cooperation partnership is proposed, linking the Piedmontese municipalities of Chieri, Asti, Carmagnola, Nichelino, Mappano, Candiolo, Poirino, and Granozzo con Monticello, with seven Senegalese municipalities: the City of Dakar, the municipalities of Loul Sassène, Walaldé , Kafountine, Ronkh Tivaouane Peulh, and Coubalan. Relations between some of these administrative realities are already well established with international cooperation networks linking the municipalities together in ten-year partnerships. The project is part of the framework of action of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), the international pact signed by more than 280 mayors of cities around the world (including Chieri and Dakar) committed to the transformation of urban food systems through the adoption of integrated and innovative food policies. The main need that emerged is the lack of an integrated approach to food policies at the local level, despite the existence of national strategies. There is a lack of expertise at the institutional policy level, and food policies are not sufficiently integrated with the issues of climate change, malnutrition, vulnerability of populations and access to food. In line with the MUFPP, the project intends to respond to these gaps and contribute to the promotion of sustainable, inclusive and resilient territorial development through the strengthening of local food systems, orienting the food system towards sound and integrated governance. This aligns with MDG 2.1 which aims to end hunger and ensure access for all people to safe, nutritious and sufficient food throughout the year. The project therefore develops and implements inclusive, sustainable and resilient Local Food Policies (LFPs) aimed at including vulnerable people in local economies. This implies adapting food production to climate change and improving access to safe and healthy food, starting with strengthening local governments' skills in food governance and then directing through participatory and integrated forms of governance shared initiatives within local food systems in various supply chains, aligned with the new PLCs, and that include vulnerable populations in local food systems, promote access to food and the well-being of local communities. read more close
