Description
The initiative, of 36 months duration, aims at contributing to the quantitative and qualitative extension of Universal Health Coverage with particular reference to maternal and child health services, ensuring access to integrated and quality health services in Côte d'Ivoire. The intervention will focus on one of the most densely populated areas of the city of Abidjan, Abobo East, which has a population of approximately 750,000 people, and on one of the most vulnerable population categories living there - pregnant women and newborns. This will be possible by acting on the 5 fundamental dimensions of access: physical access which will be improved by the infrastructural strengthening of a regional hospital and 2 health centers; the quality of the services provided, made possible by improving the skills and knowledge of the staff; the availability of medical materials and modern equipment; economic accessibility; acceptability with regard to cultural and religious values and patient expectations. The 5 dimensions of access will be integrated transversally into the 3 expected results of the project. The first two focus on the regional hospital of Abobo and, specifically, on improving the quality of care in the department of gynecology and obstetrics and on the creation of a neonatology unit. The hospital is classified as a second level hospital but the dysfunctionality of the Ivorian health system does not allow primary healthcenters to act as a filter. It is on the correction of this problem that the third result of the project acts, aimed precisely at improving the quality of primary services in the maternal- neonatal field provided by the two centers with the highest rate of use in the area. The direct beneficiaries of the initiative are 31,500 pregnant women and new mothers, 10,400 newborns, 100,000 sensitized people and 86 trained health workers.
