Description
The initiative envisages various action strategies, including improving skills at both individual and institutional levels, supporting the formation of stakeholder networks and cross-sectoral expert groups, promoting and refining legislative and policy reforms, involving the media, creating coordination mechanisms for strategic partnerships, promoting change in perceptions, behaviors, and social norms, establishing inclusion platforms at both political and civil levels, and strengthening women's political participation and leadership. The initiative will benefit from existing strategic partnerships cultivated by UN Women in Jordan and regionally to promote the development of legislative reforms in favor of women's participation in political life and beyond. The Women and Gender Unit and the Center for Legislative Studies, under the auspices of the Parliament Secretariat, will participate in a study on the presence of gender perspectives in existing laws and regulations and to support institutional capacity building work within the Parliament. Government bodies involved in the political reform process (e.g., MOPPA, IMC, etc.) will be similarly supported to improve the skills of women in senior or representative positions within municipalities or Governorates. Furthermore, project activities will support existing initiatives for the benefit of traditional and non-traditional media by supporting the Jordanian Journalists Association and the Jordanian Media Institute with the aim of raising media awareness on gender issues. Training materials produced jointly with UNDP will be used, including a survey on the perception of women's participation in politics and women's leadership in Jordan and a post-electoral report that provides an exhaustive overview of the obstacles faced by women, youth, and people with disabilities during the 2020 parliamentary elections. The initiative aims to generate, promote, and share data, evidence, and knowledge on the effectiveness of existing women's empowerment mechanisms at the local level and any gaps in the modernization process. Furthermore, institutional recommendations will be produced on strategies for disseminating a culture of gender equality. The overall objective of the initiative is to support the creation of a favorable climate for promoting women's role at the political, economic, and social levels through the promotion of laws, policies, procedures, and social perceptions that strengthen social justice and ensure equal opportunities for women. To achieve this objective, UN Women has identified the following specific goals: 1.Support the Jordanian Government and national and local institutions in adopting and implementing regulatory frameworks and policies that promote gender equality and women's participation; 2.Create a committed, diverse, and capable generation of women political leaders while improving citizens' perception of women's participation in the political and public sphere.
