Description

The initiative aims to end hunger and promote the achievement of food security in rural and indigenous Mayan rural communities. In particular, the project contributes to increasing the availability, access, consumption and adequate utilisation of healthy, nutritious and varied food in rural households with high vulnerability to chronic malnutrition, with particular attention to women, children and persons with disabilities in the Departments of Totonicapán and Sololá.Project beneficiaries are mainly smallholder farming families and beekeepers from the municipalities of Santa Cruz La Laguna and San José Chacayá and Santa Lucía Utatlán (Sololá) and Totonicapán and Santa Lucía la Reforma (Totonicapán), all municipalities with a very high or high prevalence of chronic malnutrition. The project is divided into 3 results corresponding to 3 strategies. R1: Promote sustainable, agroecological and biodiverse family food production systems, adapted to the local context and climate variability. Agroecological food production practices will be implemented that can guarantee the quantity, quality and variety of products while also strengthening community and institutional capacities in agroecology and agrobiodiversity linked to nutrition in order to create a framework that better responds to the needs of agricultural producer families. Emphasis will be placed on: the valorization of biodiversity and related Mayan indigenous knowledge; poultry farming; supporting the development of entrepreneurial capacities and the strengthening of honey production, also focusing on nutritional properties and the importance of bees in the conservation of biodiversity. R2: Rural families with high vulnerability to chronic malnutrition will implement healthy nutritional practices and actively participate in an inclusive food security program, adapted to the local context and with enhanced nutrition monitoring. Knowledge and capacities for consuming a healthy and balanced family diet will be strengthened; good environmental and food care behaviors and proper introduction of complementary feeding to children will be promoted; action will be taken to improve family living spaces; health services will be strengthened in addressing food and nutrition security (FNS) issues and advocacy for governance in food security will be carried out. Outcome 3: Strengthened participation of women and persons with disabilities in processes related to their food and nutrition security using a rights-based approach. Strengthened participation of women and PWD in processes related to food security that affect them according to a rights-based approach: Right to Social and Political Participation: for participation in any process, the precondition is to be aware that you can and have the right to participate. Right to Health, because of its importance in food security, and particularly in the use of food. Right to Food Sovereignty, by affirming this right, the rights to information, training, access to land, decision-making, access to the means of food production are affirmed, fundamental rights for marginalized people who have historically been denied the possibility to act for their autonomy and sovereignty, including food sovereignty. read more close
