Description

The initiative supports institutional capacity development within the Guatemalan penitentiary system through an integrated approach that includes intelligence for the management of high-risk prisoners, prevention of extortion and prison riots, countering criminal infiltration, and the social reintegration of detainees. The intervention is aligned with key Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 16, which aims at promoting peaceful, just, and effective institutions; SDG 16.6 which aims at developing effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels; SDG 16.a which aims at strengthening relevant national institutions, including through international cooperation, for building capacity at all levels, in particular in developing countries, to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime; SDG 4, which seeks to expand access to quality education and technical skills, including professional training for adult learners; SDG 4.4, which aims to increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship; SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities and supporting reintegration pathways for vulnerable groups, and SDG 10.2 which aims to empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status. The strengthening of institutional capacities, the introduction of prison intelligence mechanisms, and the implementation of differentiated measures for high-risk detainees contributes to a more stable, transparent, and inclusive environment within the justice and correctional sector. read more close
