Description
The initiative “IRIS: Income Enhancement in Integrated and Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains” in Mozambique is proposed by CELIM together with CEFA and ICEI, as ATS members, Granarolo Spa, as Italian partner, and Nana, Fundação LevasFlor and AKSM, as local partners. The project, in line with SDG 2.1, has the overall objective of contributing to ensure safe access to nutritious, diverse and sufficient food all year round for the population of the 6 intervention districts. It is expected to have this impact by promoting, over 3 years, the increase and diversification of income of 270 small-scale producers integrated in the aquaculture and dairy supply chains in the districts of Lugela, Namarroi (Zambezia), Dondo, Cidade de Beira, Caia (Sofala) and Sussundenga (Manica), in line with SDG 2.3. This objective, which will directly benefit 760 individuals and 270 families, will be reached through the achievement of 2 results: 1) small-scale producers of Nilotic tilapia and raw milk increase and diversify their production using a circular approach based on agroforestry, a sustainable agricultural practice that contributes to increasing biodiversity and enhancing climate change adaptation and mitigation capacity (SDG 2.4, sector 31120); 2) cooperatives and small-scale producers improve post-production and marketing processes for milk and dairy products, Nilotic tilapia, and cash crops (sector 32161). R1: In response to the insufficient initial investment to start production activities, ponds will be built and fry and seeds will be provided. In order to improve piscicultural inputs, which are currently insufficient and of poor quality, agro-forestry systems (SAFs) will be installed, which will provide raw materials for the production of artisanal feed and fodder, commercial fry and feed mills will be supported, and entrepreneurship and associativism will also be promoted for collective purchase of inputs, with a focus on gender equality. To strengthen technical skills on fish farming and sustainable agricultural practices, which are currently limited, teachers and young students will be trained. Finally, with the aim of improving technical assistance services, state extensionists will be trained and equipped. R2: With the aim of increasing the sale of quality fresh fish and cash crops, fish conservation will be strengthened, producers will be linked to retailers, and post-harvest crop losses will be limited. In order to increase the low production of milk and dairy products, raw milk delivery will be strengthened, the dairy plant staff will be trained on processing processes, and proper milk storage will be ensured through the cold chain. Finally, the management, entrepreneurial and governance skills of the plant, which are essential for marketing and developing a profitable business, will be improved.
